Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mom, grandmother as well as godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began performing in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. However, Tate was soon gaining attention for her stand-up comic that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
